BROKEN OAK FARMS is owned and operated by Richard and Marsha Rhodes. Our herd is comprised of registered Maine-Anjou, registered Angus, MaineTainer, and SIMAngus cattle. We are not a large operation. We run an average of 100 mother cows but what we lack in size we more than compensate for in the quality and power of the genetic base of our herd.
A few years ago we visited Buck Cattle Company. We were so impressed with Jirl Buck, his family, and his operation that we decided to start our Maine-Anjou herd by purchasing at private treaty some of his top bred replacement heifers. Over time we have continued to acquire Buck Cattle Company genetics by buying top prospects through Jirl's Spring & Fall Edition Sales. Like many of Buck's customers we eventually began to partner with Buck Cattle Company on top sire prospects and donor cattle. In the last two years we have increased the genetic diversity of our herd by adding select breeding pieces from the best Angus, Maine and Simmental breeders. We have a very active donor program and we artificially inseminate the majority of our cow herd. Currently we maintain and utilize a semen inventory from 15 of the best Maine, Angus, Simmental, and club calf bulls. If we miss at AI our cows are pasture exposed to our impressive group of herd bulls.
We strongly believe in the potential of the Maine-Anjou breed both in the show ring and in production. We continually work and invest in the genetic base of our herd and we strive diligently to produce show quality cattle that do not sacrifice productivity. We have bulls and replacement heifers for sale at private treaty. Look for our show heifer prospects at Buck Cattle Company's sales or call us at any time to see what we have to offer.
